Chiropractic : a recognized profession

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession whose scope of practice includes the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuro-musculo- skeletal systems.

Doctors of chiropractic seek the recovery and proper maintenance of nerve, muscle and joint functions, with a global approach to patient health. The chiropractor uses natural therapeutic methods, without the use of medication or surgery.

Chiropractic care is often performed manually, is safe and effective in relieving many discomforts and in improving the quality of life. Chiropractic is a curative as well as a preventive approach. It has been recognized, scientifically proven and practised for over a century throughout the world. Its practitioners are direct access professionals and it is not required to have a medical doctor’s referral to see a doctor of chiropractic.

People of all ages and conditions can consult a chiropractor: babies, children, teenagers, pregnant women, health-conscious adults, elite as well as recreational athletes, injured workers, seniors, etc.

Many options of intervention are available to the chiropractor, including mobilizations and manipulations (often called “adjustments”) of the spine but also of the other peripheral joints, soft tissue therapy and adjunctive therapies (electrotherapy, cryotherapy, superficial heat, etc.).

The chiropractor may also complement his intervention by prescribing corrective exercises, or by giving ergonomic or postural advice.

Although they frequently treat conditions related to the spine, chiropractors are also involved in many other conditions that can vary depending on the age of the patient. In adults, the chiropractor may be consulted in cases of joint pain (hip, shoulder, other joint), neck pain, headaches, herniated discs, sciatica, numbness, injuries caused by repetitive movements, sprains, strains, tendonitis and bursitis, etc. In the various sections of this website, you will more specifically discover the benefits that chiropractic care can offer to babies, children, adolescents and pregnant women.

Considering the global health and well-being of their patients, chiropractors often work with other health care professionals. In order to make an more complete diagnosis, they may refer their patients to other professionals according to the patient’s condition.
